Michelle Whitmore, our talent manager, selected Fisher House Foundation for her “Days of Thanks / Days of Giving” recipient.
The Fisher House Foundation provides military and veterans’ families with complimentary housing while their loved one is receiving medical treatment at nearby major military and VA medical centers. Their work is based on the premise that healing happens best when surrounded by family, and the loved ones staying there are surrounded by resources, referrals and a community that understands and shares their experience.
Each house is designed as a temporary ‘home’, and can accommodate 16 to 42 family members. They feature a common kitchen, laundry facilities, spacious dining room and an inviting living room with library, and toys for children. A Fisher House is a temporary residence and is not a treatment facility, hospice or counseling center. The program began in 1990, and has offered more than six million days of lodging to more than 305,000 families.
There are currently 72 Fisher Houses located on 24 military installations and 29 VA medical centers. These homes are located across the country, including right here in Aurora, Colorado, just a few miles from the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System. Many more houses are under construction or in design, and they are currently raising funds to open a second house in Aurora to support the need in this area.
The Fisher House Foundation has received 14 consecutive 4-star ratings from Charity Navigator, which also reports that 92.8% of donations go directly in support of travel and living expenses for the families they serve.
Michelle explained, “This foundation is near and dear to my heart as some of my immediate family, including my dad, served in Vietnam. While our family was blessed to have everyone come home safely, I feel strongly that we don’t do enough to support our service men and women, making this my charity of choice for many years.”
