Richard Klassen, one of our technical writers, selected the Safehouse Progressive Alliance as his recipient of the next $100 donation in our “Days of Thanks / Days of Giving”.
Knowing that Boulder County silently has a higher domestic violence rate than the national and state average, Richard chose the Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence (SPAN) as his “Days of Thanks / Days of Giving” recipient.
SPAN is the only organization serving Boulder, western Broomfield, smaller towns, and unincorporated Boulder County that provides shelter and advocacy for victims of domestic violence. Richard noted, “Their work is crucial because they offer “safety net” services to vulnerable, low-income and at-risk populations.”
SPAN relies heavily on donations and volunteer support to operate a 27-bed residential facility; a 24-hour crisis line that provides crisis intervention, safe shelter, food, and clothing to individuals seeking refuge from abusive relationships; a bilingual outreach counselling program; a crisis intervention advocacy program; a transitional services program that helps families find affordable housing and nutrition resources; and community education programs.
Every family receives an individual safety plan that meets their needs. To that end, the program requires a lot of resources, and as the only resource of its kind in Boulder County, the program is in dire need for community support. It is easy to donate to SPAN, and they actively welcome volunteering.
Richard also noted that SPAN hosts an amazing annual fundraiser in February of every year: the Chocolate Lovers’ Fling. Community leaders and business sponsors gather for a fun-filled evening of world-class chocolate tasting, a silent auction, gourmet catering, and a thrilling live auction. “The amount of donated silent-auction items and money the event raises is impressive and taking part of such an event is endlessly rewarding,” Richard noted.
