South Dakota Cannabis Market
Still Working Toward Adult-Use After Two Attempts
South Dakota made history with voters passing both medical marijuana and adult-use at the same time in the November 2020 election. But, the South Dakota Supreme Court ruled that Amendment A was unconstitutional. After making it to the ballot in November 2022 for another shot at legalization with Measure 27, adult-use was defeated at the polls with 53% opposed to the initiative.
While advocates regroup on next steps, cannabis entrepreneurs should continue to work on business plans and financial models to be ready for when adult-use becomes a reality in South Dakota. Being a vocal supporter in your own community and at the state level can also help foster support for eventual passage.
