East Coast Zoning Insight from Diane Czarkowski

Diane Czarkowski spoke to the Cannabis Business Times about some of the issues and challenges around local zoning laws that cannabis businesses will face in east coast cannabis markets.

Canna Advisors helped clients win some of the first competitive cannabis business licenses in Massachusetts, and Diane spoke to her experience with zoning laws in that state, saying, “Massachusetts in particular has been so much driven by the challenges at the local level.” Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont have left the decision of passing moratoriums or having their own sets of zoning requirements to the local municipality, which can sometimes even involve a town hall meeting.

To be proactive about zoning issues, Diane suggests focusing on reaching out to and meeting with city council members and the building and zoning departments when they decide to locate in a particular municipality. Cannabis business operators should not be timid when it comes to letting the community know who they are and what their intentions are. “Educational programs are always something that we encourage [clients] to do so that [the community knows] that they’re concerned about being good stewards of the industry and are educating the public of the harms of using drugs in general or just safe methods of consumption for cannabis use,” Czarkowski adds.
