Opening the Door to Success: Canna Advisors Offers Five Tips for Maryland Dispensary Winners

Maryland provisional license winners have a condensed window to prepare their retail dispensaries before final site inspections on December 21, 2017. Those who do not pass will be at risk of losing their licenses, as well as years of investment.

Tyler Stratford, Director of Client Operations at Canna Advisors offers these five tips.

  • Mobilize a design team and finish construction. Ensure workflow efficiency and security installation is implemented effectively in both the interior and exterior of the retail space.

  • Hire qualified staff and train them on-site. Provide them with an industry-specific Employee Handbook on your company and the newly regulated cannabis market.
  • Select, train, and implement POS software and cash management workflows well ahead of time, and secure banking relationships. Training should be completed one week prior to opening.
  • Prior to stocking initial inventory, have a soft opening. Invite friends, family, anyone who will give you an honest opinion. Then identify inefficiencies and implement changes so you have mitigated mistakes on opening day.
  • Have a third party audit your compliance before and after you open.

Canna Advisors secured provisional licenses for five licensees as well as the Wellness Institute of Maryland, the first state dispensary to pass inspection and open in early July.

“My advice to licensees is to be on-site. It’s the best way to spot check and learn about your company and business. The arena is ever-changing and you need to know the battleground,” stated Stratford.
With over 70 years of combined regulatory experience, Canna Advisors has played a fundamental role in the opening of the first cannabis businesses across six state markets, including: Alaska, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, and Nevada.
